AHMETBEYLi
(CLAIROS -
COLOPHON) |
 |
Although the exact foundation date of Clairos is not known it is thought
that it was built in the name of Apollo, the head god of Colophon. The Apollo temple in
Clairos, which is found in a narrow valley and in a flat
area, was very well- known in the
Hellenistic period and especially the Roman era because it was a place of
knowledge. The
reason the temple was built on a plain instead of a peak was because there was a sacred
fountain and forest there.
Clairos was not a free city throughout history. It continuously developed tied to
Clophon. There is a road full of statues which is lined with
columns. On both sides
stretching from the square shaped propylaea, that is thought to have been built in the 2nd
century A.D. , to the Apollo temple. Insciption written by people who came to consult the
oracle were found. The Apollo sculpture on the cella is 2.5m high in front of the temple
there is a monumental altar. |
|
| A new temple that was made in an Ionian Style has been
discovered on the north of the Apollo temple. This temple might belong to
Artemis. The
findings in the excavations are displayed in the Izmir Archaeology Museum. |
